Thomas O’Shaughnessy’s Diary Part 23 1891

 1891

1 Jan 1891.     I went on board the steamer ‘Bega’ at 1 o’clock  this morning at Ulladulla bound for Merimbula.  About 7 o’clock we called at Montague Island with a lighthouse on it. No timber on it. One half granite and the other slate. We kept it on our left. A boat pulled off to us. We got to Bermagui at l0 o’clock. We came alongside a small jetty. Some few years ago there was a rush here. There was some good gold got on the beach. Lamont Young, the Government Geologist and four men in a boat got lost here. The boat was found with some instruments in it but none of the men was ever found. A small township here. We got to Tathra at 12 o’clock . This is the nearest port to Bega. High land. Two large hotels. We could not get alongside the jetty. The Government is repairing it. Had to anchor and send cargo off in boats. Stayed 2 hours. Merimbula at 3.30pm. We anchored about 1 mile below Merimbula at the Bar.The ship’s boat pulled us up to Merimbula. One hotel at the jetty.  Went in ferry boat across the river here and got on a coach and went to Pambula – 5 miles. Sandy road. Price, a butcher from Blayney and I stayed at Robertson’s Commercial Hotel. There are two hotels here and 3 stores. About a mile along the road towards the goldfield, there is another hotel called the ‘Roan Horse’. After tea, Price and I went to find D. Crighton. We found him living in a large stone house near the ‘Roan Horse’. He was in charge of about 1,000 acres of private property on the rush. We got back to the hotel at 10 o’ clock. From here by coach to Bega – 25 miles. 12 miles from here to Eden, Twofold Bay. There is not much good land about here. At the township there is a good patch at high water. The tides comes in sight of the township. I see good size maize growing here. There is a fine cool climate. All machinery has to go to Eden to be unloaded. The steamer cannot get up to the wharf at Merimbula.

2 Jan   1891.   Price and I rented two horses and started from the township with D Crighton. He is going to show us over the rush. We passed the ‘Roan Horse’ hotel and followed the Eden Road to the left hand along (which) you will see some splendid timber, white and yellow box – 100ft. without a limb and other timbers just as good. We followed along a salt water river up to a crushing plant. From here up the water is fresh. This is a four stamp battery. Not working. They have broken all the gratings. We got the men at the battery to wash half a dish of the stuff they had brought  down to be crushed. A soft pipeclay looking stuff. They got about 3 grains. From there we went up the river a short distance to another crushing plant- Tornagoes Patent – a large pan with 4 large balls work around in it. From there we turned to the right uphill and then down into a creek  and followed it up to where D. Crighton is putting in a tunnel on a level with the bed of the creek. They are following a lode about 5 ft. wide. This will go about 1/2 ounce to the ton. On each side of the creek here the hills are very high and steep. We followed the creek up Golden Gem on our right, up on the side of the hill. This is a good claim. Further up we came to a store and boarding house and a lot of tents. We had dinner at the boarding house.Just here is Falkiner’s claim. They are putting in a tunnel on the right hand side. This is over 2 oz stone. On the same line on the opposite side is another good claim. They are both under offer to a syndicate. From here we took a path up the right hill. We had some work to ride up to the prospecting claim on the top of Mount Gahan. The lode here is 30ft wide. They expect the stone to go one ounce to the ton. There is a fine view of the ocean here, 600 feet above sea level. Followed road from here towards Pambula. Heavy shower just as we got back to the hotel. I sent a telegram to James O’Shaughnessy at Cowra.

3 Jan   1891.   Mr Price and I went by coach to Merimbula. Fare 4/-. 5 miles. We went on board the Alexander Berry steam tug. Steamed down the bay to where the’ Bega’ steamer was anchored. Took on some more  passengers and continued on our journey. Left the Montague Island lighthouse away to our right. Passed Moruya and Clyde Heads. Fine place for timber.
