Whitty Family – Cowra/Darbys Falls and Lachlan

I have family connection to the Whitty name.  I have blood connections to the Markham names in this Whitty tree over several generations. Mary (Whitty) Jordan’s daughter married my grandmother’s brother Thomas Walsh Markham. Patrick J (Paddy) WHITTY married Catherine Ward, my grandmother’s niece.  Furthermore many of our related family names appear among the Whitty tree,  e.g, Markham, Ward, Neville, Halpin, Lynch, Jordan, Grogan, Anthony, Taylor and Smith.

During my researches of related and local families, and with the generous contribution of others, including Rebecca Wilde and Anne Whitty, I have built up much information on the Whitty group – all part of the early history of the Cowra region…..indeed, in most cases, well before Cowra itself was proclaimed. The contribution of the Whitty family was well recognised in the mid 1850s in Father Reen’s “Catholic Cowra. An Outline of its History. ” Published 1939.:

“Go to the Markhams, the Whittys, the Ryans; consult the Newhams, Nevilles, O’Briens,   ……(and other (Catholic/Irish) families in the district)……….For they are the farming element who form the backbone  of the nation, whilst the big station-owning families are going the consumptive way of luxurious living.”

“A burnished memory of Father Bernard (Murphy) is preserved amongst the heads of the most ancient clans of the Cowra district. The Markhams, Jordans, Whittys, O’Briens and O’Dwyers, the Dalys, the Walshes, Searsons – all are proud to summon up his ghost and give it to local habitation. He is pictured riding down from Mt McDonald into Spring Vale to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice for this closely populated, if isolated, Catholic Settlement. When “Paddy O’Dwyer armed with his fiddle rode with Patrick O’Brien and company from the districts of Morongla and the middle Lachlan to the hospitable home of the Markhams for a periodical night of dancing, we can feel sure that Fr. Bernard somehow graced their happy gatherings.”

Another example, the document celebrating in 1954 the 70th anniversary of the 1884 opening of the Darbys Falls School included the following:

” Seventy years ago, John Jordan, Harry Newham and  Bill Jerome cut timber to build the first school for Darby’s Falls. It was erected where the tennis courts are now  situated in the present school grounds. The building comprised “slab” walls and “strinqy” bark roof. Pupils who attended were Tom Whitty, Paddy Whitty, Ned Whitty, Patrick Whitty, Annie Whitty, Mary Whitty, Kate Whitty, Jack Whitty, Rose Whitty, Ann Whitty, Pat Ryan, Henrietta Newham, Charlie Newham, Dave Newham, Frank Newham, Rosetta Markham, Hughie Newham, Alf Newham, Tom Markham, Charlie Markham, Lizzie Newham, Jane Newham; Hannah Newham, Paddy Jordan, Nick Jordan; John Jordan, Mary Julia Jordan, Sarah Jordan, Ann Jordan, Bill Jordan, Jessie Wensely, George Newham, Albert Newham.

Mr. C. V. C. Hudson was the first teacher appointed, it being the year 1884, and there was an attendance of approximately 40 pupils. Many of the pupils were of adult age, the eldest being Mary Jordan, who was 18 years of age when the school started. Mr. Hudson resided in a small dwelling near where Mr. Dom Whitty now resides and a weekly feature for the school children was singing lessons. The teacher would assemble the pupils and march them from the school to his home every Friday and the lessons were conducted in his home with the aid of an organ. Later single teachers boarded with the Whitty family at Milburn Creek.

I have among my papers a late 19C early colonial cadastral map of land allocations at and around the Lachlan River/Milburn Creek junction some 20 miles from Cowra NSW. These, including from early settlement, show no less than 15 blocks, totalling aroiund 2,000 acres, with a Whitty name, thus reinforcing the complimentary references to the Whitty families which I have quoted above.

Consequently, I have produced this Outline Descendant Tree for the first few colonial generations, and publish it here, hoping it to be useful to genealogists working on the Whitty, and/or related names. Please contact me if there are errors or omissions, or if information re later generations would be useful. There are Whitty references elsewhere on this website, including on the Darbys Falls Public School, and other Darbys subjects in the Index on the right. Use the search box. I do not have much more on the early colonial days of the family but would be pleased to add material here.

Patrick Whitty, (whose parents who remained in Ireland were Thomas WHITTY b.1783, and Mary HETHERTON b.1787)  and  his wife Ann Ryan, and their two children Thomas and John Joseph arrived from Ireland on the “LARNE” on 6 November 1841. It is not clear what took them to the Lachlan River but they were settled there by mid 1843, when Mary Whitty was born. Five more children were born – all in and near Cowra – over the next twelve years. Their personal details appear in the Tree below.

Whitty, Tom 30 8 1900
[Cowra Free Press 30 August 1900. Death of an Old resident. It becomes our painful duty to record the death of Mr Thomas Whitty of Milburn Creek, a very old resident of the district and a much respected and well known figure in our community. The sad event took place at Bathurst where he was undergoing special treatment for an internal complaint from which he had been an acute sufferer for some months, and it was while he was submitting to this that he succumbed. To an ordinary observer Mr Whitty appeared to be in the enjoyment of robust health, consequently the news of his death was at first received with incredulity, but, when confirmatory wires were later on received by various members of the family, very general regret was expressed. The remains were interred in the Roman Catholic cemetery at Bathurst on Sunday, a large number of relatives and friends being amongst the mourners.
The late Mr Whitty, who was a native of Ireland and 62 years of age, came to the colony with his parents when he was very young, and he was a resident of this district for many years. He belonged to that sturdy class of settlers who breasted and surmounted difficulties which many mortals would never attempt, and by his industry and thrift he managed to acquire a very snug little property, hence he leaves his widow and grownup family of seven children fairly well provided for. Amongst the surviving members of the family are his brothers Patrick and Edward, of Darbys Falls, and his sisters Mrs Thomas Smith of Cocomingla, and Mrs Thomas Hyde of Holmwood, all of whom are very worthy and much respected colonists. Our heartfelt sympathies are with the sorrowing family.]

The death is recorded of Mrs Thomas Whitty, which yook place at her husband’s residence near Darbys Falls, on Sunday before last, very suddenly. Internal haemorrhage following childbirth was the immediate cause of death. A family of nine young children, including an infant a few hours old have thus been hastily deprived of a mother’s care.

John Whitty died from cancer in the throat.
[Cowra Free Press 26 February 1892. We regret to record the death of an old and respected resident of this district, Mr John Whitty, who passed away early on the morning of the 19th Instant, after va long and painful illness. The deceased had been ailing for years with cancer in the throat, and two years ago he underwent an operation in Sydney, but it was of no avail, and since trhat time he gradually sank beyond the reach of human aid. All through his illness, he was attended by Dr Bartlett and everything was done to relieve the suffering of the unfortunate man. He has been identified with the district for nearly 50 years, being engaged in grazing pursuits, and during this period he made many friends, by whom his name will be held in everlasting esteem. Deceased leaves a sorrowing wife and family of four sons and one daughter, the eldest of whom being 23 years of age. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon and was largely attended. The Rev Father O’Kennedy conducted the burial service.]

THE LATE MR. J. N. J. JORDAN.
The above mentioned gentleman died at his late residence, Darby’s Falls, on Saturday last. The late Mr. Jordan was born at Milburn Creek, near Mt McDonald, on July 18th, 1883 (sic), consequently he was in his 83rd year. A little over four years ago he received a paralytic stroke, as a result of which he was confined to his bed up till the time of his death. Previous to being stricken down he followed farming pursuits and took a keen interest in politics. He was the first Postmaster at Darby’s Falls, retaining that position for over 30 years. Used, as he was, to the ” strenuous life,” he bore with Christian fortitude his four years of physical helplessness. A more upright or conscientious man never drew the breath of life. Eight up to within a few weeks of his death he was a voracious reader, and kept himself conversant with the doings of the world. He was frequently at- tended by the Cowra priests, and died fortified by the Sacraments. He leaves 4 sons, Patrick William and Nicholas Bernadine (Darby’s Falls), John Edward (Mount McDonald), Thomas R., (man- ager for Jas. Martin & Co., Temora), and 4 daughters, Mrs T. Markham (Darby’s Falls), Mesdames H. Grogan, W. A. Markham, and Miss S. J. Jordan (Cowra) to mourn their loss. The funeral to the Darby’s Falls cemetery on Sunday evening was a large one, Rev. D. O’Kennedy officiating at the grave-
side. R.I.P.[Cowra Free Press 4 July 1917.]

The Late Mr Edward Whitty.
After years of intense suffering, which was borne with Christian fortitude, Mr Edward Whitty of Darbys Falls, one of the most estimable of the residents of the Upper Lachlan, passed peacefully away at his home on Monday last. About eighteen months back the late Mr Whitty underwent a very critical operation at the hands of Dr McCormack, which it was for some time hoped would have the effect of prolonging a useful life, but unfortunately, unfavourable symptoms manifested themselves a few months later, and it then became evident that he was beyond human skill. For some time past he hovered between life and death, consequently when the end came, it was not wholly unexpected. The subject of our notice was native of the district, having been born at Merriganowry, 56 years ago, his father and mother, Mr and Mrs Patrick Whitty, being then residents of that locality. Later on, Mr Edward Whitty settled at Milburn Creek, near Darbys Falls, where he married a member of an old time honoured family, Miss Mary Sarah Jordan, who survives him, and by whom he leaves issue a grown up family of one son and two daughters. The very large number that attended the funeral on Monday afternoon evidenced the measure of respect entertained for the memory of the deceased. The body was first conveyed to St Raphael’s Church and then to the cemetery, the Rev. Father O’Kennedy officiating on both occasions. Our entire sympathies are with the disconsolate widow and family in their hour of sorrow. The relatives of the deceased in this district are legion, and are numbered amongst the most thrifty, estimable and ell to do members of our community. [Cowra Free Press 8 July 1909.]
