1842 Ward – Co. Galway, Ireland

I have the usual family connections with the Ward name. Two granddaughters of Edmund Markham, my G G Grandfather, married sons of Patrick Ward. Many other pioneer Lachlan names, particularly Whitty and Marks,  appear among the intermarrying descendant families.

Patrick Ward came to New South Wales as a bounty emigrant on the “Champion” arriving in Port Jackson on 12 February 1842. Shipping records show he was aged 19, Agricultural Labourer, Roman Catholic, and could read and write. It is likely that he moved immediately to the land west of Newcastle. He was married in Maitland  on 18 October 1845 and the couple had six children, all born in the Hunter River area of Maitland/Singleto. His wife, Catherine Ryan arrived in 1840 on ther “Adam Lodge” describred as a Farm(?) Servant, Roman Catholic, Native Place Limerick and engaged by  E Deas Thompson Esq?  Woolloomoolloo . It is unknown how long she stayed employed by this distinguished colonial leader, or how and when she reached Maitland.

Nor do I have much information on the family’s life in the area but the attached extracts from Sydney and Mudgee newspapers in 1931 are informative and interesting. Patrick was very successful in the horse racing industry The article desctribes him asin the following terms:

Patrick Ward, gentleman, of Merriwa, N.S.W. Everyone who knew racehorses in those days knew of Patrick Ward. He had a string of racehorses with the “longest noses in Australia.” That is what they said, because Patrick Ward’s horses usually had their noses in front of all other noses at the winning posts throughout the country. Patrick Ward owned Pasha, and other horse of Stockwell blood, too. Look up  the files of old Maitland newspapers, and you’ll find his name linked also with such favorites of the day as Grecian Queen, The Snake, Lord Raglan, Mystery, The Egg, Daughter o’ the Regiment, Sultan, Sappho, Jack the Giant Killer. He was King of the Turf, was Patrick Ward. He was a czar of sports men then, a great gambler of the gold his horses won him, and rather the Beau Brummel and Beau Nash of the race track, too.
