1854 Haughey – Co. Fermanagh, Ireland

Susan (Shannon) Murray’s second sister emigrated with her family, on the ‘SWITZERLAND’ arriving in Sydney on 16 June 1854. Thus four families. In the Immigration Agent list [1] Margaret recorded her name as Houghey and her parents as Phillip and Mary Shannon. She declared that she was “…the sister of Mrs Murray in Ulladulla NSW”.  It is interesting to note blacksmith as the trade qualifications of John and Thomas as our (inconclusive) research in Griffiths Valuations has Susan (Shannon) Murray’s father as a blacksmith in Fermanagh. The record on Reel 2467 adds the words “or policeman” under Thomas’ calling. John Haughey’s parents, Francis and Rosa were listed as “both dead”. on website

The family appeared to settle in Murrumburrah, where the name is ubiquitous, though Margaret apparently died in Ulladulla as she is buried in the Armstrong Forest Cemetery.

Rose (Haughey) Dillon b. 1834, the married daughter above, was married to John Bernard Dillon b. 1832[2].DILLON, John Bernard (1828 -1884). Arr NSW late 1850s, Murrumburrah from 1860.  His wife, Rose Anne (Haughey) Dillon (1834 – 1919) arrived with her parents and siblings on the “Switzerland” 1854. First to Milton NSW where her relatives from Murray, Shannon, McGee, Johnston and Haughey families had settled. The Dillon link is part of this extended Fermanagh family emigration story I am developing. Her husdband arrived in  NSW on the “BEE” in 1856.. He died in Binalong on April 18 1884, when his stated age was 54[3] (i.e b.1830). It may be that a relative (brother?) was in Binalong along with John Bernard as Bridget and Thomas had a child, George, there in 1862.

This is an early stage of research. Hopefully, others might contribute. In the meantime I list below the Tree so far as is present developed.

[DILLON: April 18, at his residence, Rosemere, Murrumburrah, John Bernard Dillon in the 54th year of his age, leaving a loving wife and seven children to mourn their loss. R.I.P.SMH Tuesday 29 Apr 1884]

[DEATH OF A PIONEER.The death of Mrs. Rose Ann Dillon, relict of the late Mr. John B. Dillon, at her residence, Moonah, Darling Point, Sydney, removes one of the pioneers of the Murrumburrah district. The deceased lady, who was 86 years of age, arrived in the Murrumburrah district in 1860, and at one time was interested in the Mount Dillon Estate and Vineleigh, Demondville. The late Mrs. Dillon was a native of Fermanagh, Ireland, and will be long remembered for her kindness and hospitality while at Rosemore, her Murrumburrah residence. She was remarkable for her literary ability, and took a keen interest in the events of the day almost to the eve of her death. Her remains were taken to Murrumburrah for interment. Among the chief mourners were: – Mr. Charles Joseph Dillon, of Murrumburrah, son, Mesdames M. G. Melville and K. J. Baker, of Sydney (daughters),  Mr. N. D. Healy, of Moruya, and Mr. Rupert Dillon, of Murrumburrah (grandsons), Mr. O. A. Edwards, S. M., of Wollongong (son-in law), and Mr. P. Haughey (nephew).           SMH 22/04/1919 page 8]

[A PIONEER’S DEATH The funeral of the late Mrs. Rose Ann Dillon, aged 86, relict of the late Mr. John B. Dillon, who died at her residence, “Moorah,” Darling Point, Sydney, early on Thursday afternoon. The remains were brought from Sydney on Saturday morning and placed in the R.C. Church, Murrumburrah, from whence the funeral started about 3 p.m. The late Mrs. Dillon was practically one of the pioneers—if not the pioneer—of the Murrumburrah district, arriving here about 1860, and at one time possessed a considerable amount of town and pastoral property, among which was the well- known “Mount Dillon Estate,” also “Vineleigh,” Demondrille. The history of Murrumburrah practically begun with the arrival of the Dillon family. Both the late Mr. John B. Dillon and his wife were natives of Ireland, the former from Roscommon, and the latter from Fermanagh. The late Mrs. Dillon will long be remembered for her many acts of kindness and hospitality while at her “Rosemore” homes at Murrumburrah. She was remarkable for her literary ability, and took keen interest in the events and topics of the day, right up to the eve of her death, which took place suddenly.

The chief mourners were Mr. C. J. Dillon of Murrumburrah (son), Mesdames M. G. Melville, and K. J. Baker, of Sydney (daughters), Mr. Nicholas Dillon Henly, of Moruya (grandson), Mr. Rupert Dillon, of Murrumburrah (grandson), and Mr. Osman A. Edwards, S.M., of Wollongong (son-in-law), and Mr. P. Haughey (nephew). –“Signal.”Young Witness, Tuesday 15 April 1919, page 2
