1839 Ryan – Co. Tipperary, Ireland

I have attached here a paper ‘The Ryan Family, by APB 1984’  It is an incomplete record as it was written before the explosion of internet accessible records. Nevertherless it is an important recollection, with additional family commentary, of Agnes Patricia (Ryan)  Bonnington’, a granddaughter of John Corrigan Ryan and Mary Hickey.

See also Fr Max Barrett’s “A Riot of Ryans” specifically  Chapter 16 – It is here ‘A Set of Ryan Siblings, John, Ellen, Thomas’. Fr Barrett acknowledges in his book that he corresponded in his research with descendants Agnes Bonnington and Philip Kennedy Howard.

I have prepared, with help from others,  a new and updated  Outline Descendant Tree to four NSW generations, and include it on this page.

John Corrigan Ryan (1810-1891) emigrated from County Tipperary, Ireland to New South Wales, arriving on 20 December 1839 on the ‘CHINA. He was accompanied by his sister Ellen.

According to Fr Barrett, their brother Thomas (1814-1857) followed them in the ‘ALFRED’ arriving in the Colony on 7 January 1840.). However Agnes Bonnington states that her mother told her that all three arrived together. I lean towards her version . There was a Thomas Ryan on the China who “went to Mr Robertson, Hunter River’ a note made also against John Ryan’s name. John and Thomas wee listeed in sequence, a common practice where siblings travelled together. Their sister name had the note “Gone with her brother to Patterson’s River’ This is a tributary of the Hunter. So I have recorded that all three arrived together. If birth and arrival dates need correction, please let me know.

Why they went to the Hunter River is unclear, as they finished up in the Binalong/Boorowa/Lachlan  region. Fr Barrett suggests that they went immediately to the Boorowa area. A puzzle yet to be solved!.

My interest in this Ryan family arises from marriages at later generations, particularly two of the children of John Corrigan Ryan and Mary Hickey:

Bridget  Ryan (1866-1953) married my grandmother’s brother Nicholas Markham,(1870-1939). He was the grandson of original convict/ settler Edmund Markham (1802-1866). Bridget was known to all the (Darbys Falls/Northwood) familes as ‘Aunty Bid Nick’ to differentiate from other aunts with the very common Irish name of Bridget.

Thomas Ryan (1858-1917) married my grandmother’s first cousin, Hannah Walsh (1867-1943). She was the daughter of Thomas Walsh (1820-1899), who had emigrated from County Limerick in the 1840s with seven siblings. (See Margaret Wilkinson’s ‘The Walsh Story’ on this website). Thomas Ryan’s obituary follows:

Cowra Free PressWednesday May 16 1917  Obituary

The Late Thomas Ryan

We are quite confident in asserting that there is not anyone in the Cowra district who was acquainted with the late Thomas Ryan who did not feel that he had been bereft of a true friend when the news of his death was learned on Sunday last for he was “a man” in every sense of the word. The late Mr. Ryan had not been in good health for some little time, but it was only about a week ago that he was stricken down. Indeed he intended to go to the polling booth and record his vote on Saturday week but the fates decreed otherwise. The deceased gentleman was one of our most successful “men on the land” and his property at “Northwood” Darby’s Falls is looked upon as an ideal farming and grazing property. It is only of late years that the late Mr. Ryan went in extensively for sheep breeding, which he made such a success of that it was a very common thing for his sheep to top the Sydney markets. He was a very prominent member of the Farmers and Settlers Association and has been one of the representatives of his branch on the Lyndhurst District Council ever since its inception. Deceased was a very familiar figure in our town and will be much missed by a large circle of friends. He was a devote member of the Roman Catholic Church and was attended by Very Rev. Father O’Kennedy  ( a close personal friend) in his last illness and died fortified with the last sacrament of the Holy Church. The late Mr. Ryan was a native of Binalong where he was born in 1859. Some thirty four years ago he came to the district where he has resided ever since. In 1903 he married Miss Hannah (eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. Walsh) who with a family of two sons and one daughter remain to mourn their irreparable loss. Mr. Patrick Ryan (Billimari) and Mrs. Nicholas Markham (Darby’s Falls) and Mrs Thomas Glennan  (Gooloogong) are brother and sisters of the deceased.

The funeral to the Roman Catholic portion of the General Cemetery on Monday was very largely attended. The last sad rites were performed by Very Rev. Father O’Kennedy, assisted by Father Lynch (Gooloogong).

Funeral arrangements were conducted by Messrs. J. S. Poignand and Co

There are several other marriages of related, some by marriage and distant, descendants. Furthermore, they reinforce the evidence of the continuing family relationships among the early Irish pioneer settlers in the region over several generations.
