1 Jan 1884      New Year’s day. Not many people about.

2 Jan 1884      Sarah O’Shaughnessy married to John Hackett and went by coach for Blayney, bound for Sydney.

3 Jan 1884      Not much business. Miss Hackett went by coach for Blayney.

4 Jan 1884      Tom and Ellen Walsh, Mrs McGrath, Hannah Middlemiss started for Kikiamah. Three casks of beer from Sydney.

5 Jan 1884      Real hot day.

6 Jan  1884     Sunday.  Bridget Walsh from Kikiamah and Mrs James Markham went on the coach bound for Sydney.

7 Jan 1884      At the Royal.

8 Jan 1884      Foundation Stone of P Murray’s new store laid.

9 Jan 1884      A sale of Mrs Mylechlorane’s furniture. I bought a cow from Tom Byrnes, Morongla Creek.

10/11 Jan 84   At the Royal

12 Jan 1884    I took up a Promissary Note of £100 at the Commercial bank. Hot day.

13/19 Jan 84   At the Royal.

20 Jan 1884    Sunday.  A fine shower in the evening.

21 Jan 1884    Lent James O’Shaughnessy 13 pounds. Paid Tom Markham. Mrs cantwell came to cook.

22/25 Jan 84   At the Royal

26 Jan 1884    Anniversary day. A picnic at the showground.

27 Jan 1884    Enright’s. son killed from a fall from a horse.

28 Jan 1884    I was summonsed on young Enright’s inquest. Buried today.

29/31 Jan 84   At the Royal.

1 Feb 1884      At the Royal. (For all of February. 2nd. Races at Mulyan race course; 15th. Business very slack; 21st. great scarcity of water in the district; 23rd. A great many of the selectors carting water from the river; 28th. No grass in the district.)

1 Mar 1884      At the Royal for all of March. (19th. Two booths sold on the Showground for the railway demonstration. 25th Great rejoicings. Flags flying at every house in the town. Good sports on the Showground. A great demonstration. A large crowd on the ground. George Campbell and Andrew Lynch, our two members, on the Showground.26th Martin Ryan, Toohey’s traveller, came. Tom Markham took the black mare to Kikiamah. 27th Martin Ryan went and stayed at Daly’s to go early by the Orange coach. 31th Plunkett sold off.)

1 Apr 1884      At the Royal for all of April. (2nd. Marion Willis Troupe came. 25th P Walsh, and Pat, his son, came from Kikiamah. 26th  Alford’s land sale. Some lots not sold. 28th P Walsh, and Pat, his son, started for Kikiamah. A land inquiry today. Alf Chambers came from Sydney.)

1 May 1884     At the Royal for all of May. (2nd. P Murray came from Sydney.Alford’s land sale realised £1075.12.6. 9 th Dr Bartlett cut an ulcer out of my under lip.10 th. In bed all day. 11thSunday.  The Dr took the pins out of my lip. 12th.I got up. A little rain. 14th  Crown land sale over the river. Average £12 per acre. 24th. I had a booth at the Showground.)

1 Jun 1884.     At the Royal to and beyond 14 June. (6th. Nicholas Challacombe let the.Royal Hotel to John    Costello.)

15 Jun 1884    Sunday.  I went with Fraser in his buggy to Alf Chambers’ place. He came in the buggy with us to Mt McDonald. We had a look at the reefs and came home to Cowra.

16/27 Jun 84   At the Royal.

28 Jun 1884    I had a booth at the showground at the Sports. A poor gathering.

29 Jun 1884    Sunday.  Fixing up things in the billiard room to be sold on Monday.

30 Jun 1884    John Muir commenced to sell. Everything in the house to be sold. Everything going cheap. Sale not finished tonight.

1 Jul 1884       Sold all the furniture except enough to keep on the house when John Costello came to take possession.

2 Jul 1884       At the Royal. All day by myself.

3 Jul 1884       John Costello came on horseback and stayed at Boxall’s.

4 Jul 1884       John Costello’s wagon came. I gave him my bill. He would not pay it. I would not give him possession.

5 Jul 1884       Costello paid the bill £56. I took everything out of the bar tonight. Costello and family staying at Boxall’s.

6 Jul 1884       Sunday.  At the Royal.

7 Jul 1884       I transferred the Licence of the Royal Hotel to john Costello and gave him possession.

8 Jul 1884       I sold the billiard table and all the liquors to W Boxall and delivered some.

9 Jul 1884       Delivered all to Boxall and got two Promissary Notes for the full amount.

10 Jul 1884     Commenced to work at the Mill verandah. He and I had the contract. He had Ned Bath working with him.

11 Jul 1884     Working at the verandah to 20th..

21 Jul 1884     Pat Tobin and I at work. Bath on the spree.

22 Jul 1884     Tobin sick. Bath not come. I did some painting at home.

23 Jul 1884     Painting Mill verandah posts to 26th..

27 Jul 1884     Sunday.  At home.

28 Jul 1884     Tobin, Bath and I working at the verandah to 31st.mmmm

1 Aug 1884      At work.

2 Aug 1884      Boarding the verandah. I gave Ned Bath 11/-

3 Aug 1884      Sunday.  P Murray and I went to Bob Toshack’s place on the Waugoola Creek and had dinner there. Bob walked in to Woods Flat with us. We came on to Cowra.

4 Aug 1884      Tobin, Bath and I working at the verandah. Up to 7th.

8 Aug 1884      We finished the verandah.

9 Aug 1884      I got Alick Middlemiss to pull down a gum tree near the house with his Forest devil.

10 Aug 1884    Sunday.  I went up to P Murray’s cottage. Cold day.

11 Aug 1884    Not doing anything.

12/13 Aug 84   No work.

14 Aug 1884    Taking out bills.

15 Aug 1884    I got a summons out for Mrs Grant of Merriganowry.

16 Aug 1884    Tom Markham and I put up a shed. I got some ornamental trees from Sydney. A cold day.

17 Aug 1884    Sunday.  Cold winds.

18 Aug 1884    We planted the ornamental trees.

19 Aug 1884    Putting a fence around the trees.

20 Aug 1884    Tom Markham putting up the frame of a shed.

21 Aug 1884    John Muir and I went out to Woods Flat.

22 Aug 1884    Tom Markham and I cut a log off a gum tree that the chinamen felled near their garden. We could not get it on the truck.

23 Aug 1884    James Markham brought in the log with his bullock team.

24 Aug 1884    Sunday.  At home.

25 Aug 1884    I went up to the Court House. I met Maurice Walsh there. He agreed to pay Mrs Grant’s bill. I did not appear at court.

26 Aug 1884    I got a letter from Clutterbuck with a one pound note enclosed in it. He is in Lithgow. Tom Markham carting wood for old Sergeant.

27/28 Aug 84   At home all day.

29 Aug 1884    Tom Markham and I cut down a gum tree near the junction of Morongla Creek.

30 Aug 1884    Splitting the gum tree all day.

31 Aug 1884    Sunday.  At home.

1/2 Sep 1884   Tom Markham and I putting up a booth at the Showground for Thomas Walsh.

3 Sep 1884      Show day. A great number of people at it. Walsh made sixty pounds in the booth.

4 Sep 1884      We put up a booth at the ploughing match in Middlemiss’ paddock for Thomas Walsh. Not many people at the match.

5 Sep 1884      Alf chambers and I went to the Court House to see the specifications for work to Kendal Street, Cowra. We did not tender. I went up to where we were splitting the gum tree. The water in the river rose over the post we had split.

6 Sep 1884      Tom Markham and I took the team up to the gum tree and brought down a load of posts.

7 Sep 1884      Sunday.  Good rain in the evening.

8 Sep 1884      Tom Markham carting bricks. I put up a forge.

9/11 Sep 84     I was working about the house. At home.

12 Sep 1884    I got some bricks from sergeant to fix the garden beds and got some lime and sand.

13/16 Sep 84   Working at the garden.

17 Sep 1884    Tom Markham went to Warrengong with a load of goods for P Murray. I was working in the garden.

18 Sep 1884    Tom came from Warrengong and brought some kurrajongs.

19 Sep 1884    Tom, Pat Markham and I went and cut down a gum tree near the junction of Morongla Creek. Mrs Mulally came to Cowra. Sent a letter to Clutterbuck.

20 Sep 1884    Tom, Pat Markham and I went to split the gum tree. They took off the but cut.

21 Sep 1884    Sunday.  At home all day.

22 Sep 1884    Tom, Pat Markham and I went up to the gum tree.   I put some shots in the but cut, and split some splendid posts. Judge Docker heard a good many cases. John Muir the case between Lawrence and Whittaker.

23 Sep 1884    Tom Markham and I splitting the gum all day. We walked up. We could not find the horses.

24/27 Sep 84   We took the three horses and dray up to the gum tree and brought home a load in the evening. Load of posts.

28 Sep 1884    Sunday.  At home all day.

29 Sep 1884    Tom Markham carting bricks for Mr Francis to build an office for the Cowre Free Press.

30 Sep 1884    Tom carted one load of bricks and then went up to the gum tree, and brought two loads of posts and all the tools.

1 Oct 1884      Tom carting bricks. I was putting up a shed.

2/4 Oct 1884   Working at the shed.

5 Oct 1884      Sunday. Went to mass. Ted Markham came in with his family from Grenfell.

6/8 Oct 1884   Working at the shed..Ted Markham to Grenfell, 7th; back on 8th.)

9 Oct 1884      Working at the shed. Ted and Tom Markham commenced to sink a well for a brickyard in Middlemiss’ paddock.

10 Oct 1884    Working at the shed.

11 Oct 1884    Working at the shed. Mrs Mallon died.

12 Oct 1884    Sunday.  I went up to P Murray.

13 Oct 1884    Mrs O’Shaughnessy, Grace and Kate Walsh went in a buggy with Pat Mulally to Blayney. They are going to Pert? near Bathurst.

14/16 Oct 1884           Working at the shed. Henry Brien got a 12 horsepower engine from Sydney.

17 Oct 1884    We finished the cordial manufactory for James Mulally. Mrs O’Shaughnessy came from Bathurst.

18 Oct 1884    Working at the house.

19 Oct 1884    Sunday.  At home.

20 Oct 1884    Ted Markham and I finished and (sic) at the brickyard and bricked it up. Working at the house in the evening.

21 Oct 1884    Tom Markham carting earth around P Murray’s new store. I was making a barrow. A few good showers today.

22/25 Oct 84   Working at the brickyard. Putting up a pug mill. Up to 25th.

26 Oct 1884    Sunday.  At home. 

27 Oct 1884    Commenced to work the pug mill. Some of the knives broke.

28 Oct 1884    I hired Owen McMahon to work at the pug mill. I went to assist George Hurst to finish James Mulally’s lemonade factory.

29/31 Oct 84   Working at the factory.

1/7 Nov 1884  Working at the factory.

8 Nov 1884     We finished the factory. E A Baker addressed the electors of Cowra tonight. Mr Hackett came from Gongolgon.

9 Nov 1884     Sunday.  At home all day.

10 Nov 1884   James Mulally paid George Hurst and me for putting up the lemonade factory.

11/14 Nov 84  Working at the brickyard.

15 Nov 1884   Working at the brickyard. George Campbell lectured on the Bill. Freehill from Sydney, Garland from Carcoar, and Tom Fitzpatrick from Carcoar addressed the electors of Cowra tonight.

16 Nov 1884   Rained all night and up to 12 o’clock today. Very heavy. Sunday.

17/20 Nov 84  Working at the brickyard.

21 Nov 1884   Polling day between E A Baker, Garland and Tom Fitzpatrick. E A Baker got a large majority. Old W R Watt gave the crowd a cask of beer tonight.

22 Nov 1884   E A Baker came from Carcoar and thanked the electors for returning him to Parliament.

23 Nov 1884   Sunday.  At home all day.

24/29 Nov 84  Working at the brickyard.

30 Nov 1884   Sunday.  At home.

1 Dec 1884     Commenced to set a kiln of bricks.

2/6 Dec 1884  Setting bricks, set fire and kiln burning.

7 Dec 1884     Sunday.  At home all day.

8 Dec 1884     Opened the kiln. They looked well.

9 Dec 1884     made a fresh start. Two moulds going.

10 Dec 1884   Brickmaking. I am rolling in for Ted.

12/18 Dec 84  Brickmaking.

19 Dec 1884   Kate Hackettx born.

20/24 Dec 84  Making bricks.

25 Dec 1884   Christmas Day. Ted Markham went to Grenfell.

26/29 Dec84   At home all day 

30 Dec 1884   I rode out to the Conimbla Mountain to look for grass tree to cover bricks on the hacks. Could not find any.

31 Dec 1884   At home all day.
