Thomas Acres/Ann Guy, Henderson, Peters etc

FIRST FLEETER THOMAS ACRES was tried in the Devon Lent Assizes on 14 March 1785. He, along with John Smith, ,was convicted of

“Feloniously assaulting John Squance in the King’s Highway, feloniously putting him in corporal fear of his life in the said Highway, and feloniously and violently taking from his person and against his will in the said Highway 10 shillings his monies.”

He was sentenced to be hanged, though in accordance with the usual practice at the time,  this was varied immediately to seven years on condition that he accepted transportation. Acres was born in Devon, England, in 1758.

After time on the prison hulk ‘DUNKIRK’ , he embarked on the ‘CHARLOTTE’ in Portsmouth on the 11th March 1787. Being 335 tons, 105 ft long and 28 ft at the beam, The Charlotte held 88 male and 20 female convicts. Built in 1784 and Skippered by Master Thomas Gilbert, her return to England saw her doing the London – Jamacia run until she was sold to a Quebec merchant in 1818 and was then lost off the coast of Newfoundland that very same year.

The Charlotte arrived at Botany Bay on the 18th January 1788. Acres was emancipated four years later in 1792.

THIRD FLEETER ANN GUY (nee HINCHLEY) born London 1757 had arrived in the Colony, also as a convict, on the THIRD FLEET’s “MARY ANN” in 1791. Acres was unable to marry Ann Guy; as she had a living husband in England. [Ann Hinchley was previously married to Alexander Guy on 18 May 1789 at St. Leonard, Shoreditch, London (no known issue)]

Mary Ann Acres was born on the 25th May 1792 at Sydney Cove.  On 5 May 1806 she married Dudley Hartigan b. Tipperary 1775. Hartigan was deported to Australia with the Irish Rebels on the ‘MINERVA’  out of Cork, Ireland, arriving in NSW on 11 January 1800. Maryann died 4 June 1826 and was burned at Cambelltown Mary Ann”’s married descendants include the late Emilie (Henderson) Harris as well as Gai (Peters) Finkelde of Cowra.

On the 3rd November 1794, Thomas was granted twenty acres of land at Mulgrave Place on the Hawkesbury River.

Sophia Acres was born to Thomas and Ann at Mulgrave Place on the 15th May 1795. In 1798 Thomas was attacked and speared by Aborigines at Mulgrave Place and the same year a son, another Thomas was born. The following year 1799, saw Henry born.

In 1800 Acres along with 14 other landholders, lodged a petition for fair prices for their produce and purchases with the Governor. By mid 1800 devastating floods had destroyed his property and he had to rent a property for his family. Some good news followed with the birth of Catherine in 1801.

In 1802 Thomas purchased twenty acres, had ten sown in wheat and six more in maize. He had two pigs and his family was self-supporting. In May 1805 he sold the land at Mulgrave Place for 180 pounds. In partnership with Thomas Phillips at (Cat Eye) Cattai, Acres had twenty two and a half acres. Fourteen acres of grain, one acre of orchard and garden, the rest of pasture and fallow. With 12 sows and four bushels of wheat in store, it was considered he was a success.

By 1814, Thomas was living in the Liverpool district, believed to be where the Crossroads and Hurlstone Agriculture College now is. The 1814 Muster states that Thomas Acres was free of servitude, a landholder of Liverpool, living with wife Ann and off Government stores. By the 8th October 1816, he owned a further 40 acres at Airds.

Thomas Acres died on the 4th January 1824 at Cowpastures, NSW. He is believed to be buried in the grounds of St Peter’s Church of England, Campbelltown. A plaque to his memory and that of Ann Guy – Acres was erected in the grounds of St. Peter’s by the Thomas Acres Society in 2008. The Sydney Mail, in 1883, stated that the first burial at St. Peter’s was that of Thomas Acres.

Ann died in 1831.
